Unloaded the kiln

I have learned so much about working with terra sig, underglazes and glazes through this last group of pots. I made some test tiles to play with. The tiles have been fired twice. I enjoy earthenware so much because you can maintain an intimate relationship with each piece from making through the final firing. There's not that ugly bisque stage to contend with -- because the surface treatment begins at either leatherhard or greenware.

The first photo grouping of pots have been completed and will go out into the world for a holiday show -- but I will continue playing with the tiles -- they are only tests. I'm thinking the hard part - now - is knowing when they are finished.

Girrrrllll, you are dialed in to that Earthenware! I love the colors and especially the tiles. Looks like so much fun. I wish I could "feel" the earthenware, but it just isn't in me :( I picked up another bag of Phoenix today, I think this might be the one (ha! we'll see).

Judy, I was here earlier and about to leave a note when I got called away from the computer. I love the colors in your new work. And it seems you are really 'at home' with your earthenware work. It looks great.
Yes, I don't know about the 'seeing' part of our work. I saw pots last weekend at the Texas Clay Festival that I would have considered 'seconds' but they were offered for sale with no apologies. I was too embarrassed to show the errors in the photos on my blog : ) If I can't show them on the blog how can I put them out on the shelves? Just need to back up and spend more time working on the details. Thanks for you note of encouraement!

love the creamy texture to your new colors and your tiles look promising. I'm loving the layering and depth of the look you are achieving with your new earthenware glazes.

Tracey -- the work you are doing with Phoenix is wonderful. Can you re-fire (lowfire/oxidation-kiln) a raku piece & use a liner glaze to make it more functional? Or can you use a liner glaze during raku? - a nice black inside a bowl with your copper blue on the outside would be stunning!

Gay - I think everyone finds faults with their work -- and I have also seen some well-known potters sell what I consider seconds -- don't know exactly how I feel about it. And I think you said exactly what's important -- pay attention to the details!

Linda - thanks - it's fun to layer & refire.

looks like you're gonna be loving this earthenware thing. amazing colors (i guess that's one reason people love it) like that golden yellow lidded jar.

Hey Jim - it's not just the colors -- it's having a little more control -- & the process keeps me more engaged with each piece -- but that's how you work already @ ^6. I was bored dunking my pieces in a bucket!
